Oracle RAC - Package installation commands
Oracle RAC Solution · Config document · referenced from Operating system preparation
The commands that installed the operating system packages Oracle Grid Infrastructure and Oracle Database 11.2 need on SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 SP3, with the checks that follow each group, the cvuqdisk package from the Oracle medium and the three ASMLib packages.
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| Run on | oradb01 and oradb02 |
| Run as | root |
| Operating system | SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 SP3 |
| Package sources | the SLES repositories (zypper), the unpacked Oracle Database medium in /data/install/database/rpm, two downloads from Oracle |
| Versions fixed by the commands | cvuqdisk 1.0.9-1, oracleasm-support 2.1.8-1, oracleasmlib 2.0.4-1 |
The commands
$ zypper install binutils $ zypper install gcc $ zypper install gcc-32bit $ zypper install gcc-c++ $ zypper install glibc $ zypper install glibc-32bit $ zypper install glibc-devel $ zypper install glibc-devel-32bit $ zypper install ksh $ zypper install libaio $ zypper install libaio-32bit $ zypper install libaio-devel $ zypper install libaio-devel-32bit $ zypper install libstdc++33 $ zypper install libstdc++33-32bit $ zypper install libstdc++43 $ zypper install libstdc++43-32bit $ zypper install libstdc++43-devel $ zypper install libstdc++43-devel-32bit $ zypper install libgcc43 $ zypper install libstdc++-devel $ zypper install make $ zypper install sysstat $ rpm -q --qf '%{NAME}-%{VERSION}-%{RELEASE}(%{ARCH})\n' binutils gcc gcc-32bit gcc-c++ glibc glibc-32bit glibc-devel glibc-devel-32bit ksh libaio libaio-32bit libaio-devel libaio-devel-32bit libstdc++33 libstdc++33-32bit libstdc++43 libstdc++43-32bit libstdc++43-devel libstdc++43-devel-32bit libgcc43 libstdc++-devel make sysstat $ zypper install unixODBC $ zypper install unixODBC-devel $ zypper install unixODBC-32bit $ rpm -q --qf '%{NAME}-%{VERSION}-%{RELEASE}(%{ARCH})\n' unixODBC unixODBC-devel unixODBC-32bit $ zypper install xorg-x11 $ zypper install libcap1 $ rpm -q --qf '%{NAME}-%{VERSION}-%{RELEASE}(%{ARCH})\n' xorg-x11 libcap1 $ cd /data/install/database/rpm $ rpm -ivh ./cvuqdisk-1.0.9-1.rpm $ zypper install numactl $ wget http://oss.oracle.com/projects/oracleasm-support/dist/files/RPMS/sles11/amd64/2.1.8/oracleasm-support-2.1.8-1.SLE11.x86_64.rpm $ wget http://download.oracle.com/otn_software/asmlib/oracleasmlib-2.0.4-1.sle11.x86_64.rpm $ rpm -ivh ./oracleasm-support-2.1.8-1.SLE11.x86_64.rpm $ zypper install oracleasm $ rpm -ivh ./oracleasmlib-2.0.4-1.sle11.x86_64.rpm
The command set follows the order of the notes. The first rpm -q is written there over four lines with line continuations; it is one command and is shown on one line. The notes keep no output of any of these commands, so the versions zypper installed are not recorded.
| Commands | What they cover |
|---|---|
23 times zypper install, then rpm -q | the package list of the installation guide for SLES 11, and the check that every package is present; the format string prints name, version, release and architecture, which tells the 64-bit and the 32-bit package apart |
unixODBC, unixODBC-devel, unixODBC-32bit, then rpm -q | the guide's additional requirement for the Oracle ODBC drivers, 2.2.12 or later |
xorg-x11, libcap1, then rpm -q | X libraries for the graphical installers, and a library the notes say the installation needs |
rpm -ivh ./cvuqdisk-1.0.9-1.rpm | the package the Cluster Verification Utility uses to discover shared disks |
numactl, oracleasm-support, oracleasm, oracleasmlib | "other packages Oracle RAC + ASM requires": the ASMLib tools, kernel driver and library |
cvuqdisk has to be installed after the group oinstall exists; in the notes the groups and users are created between the X packages and this command (see Operating system preparation). The package is taken from the unpacked database medium under /data, a file system the notes create only in a later chapter (see Storage and ASM disks); the notes are ordered by topic, not by time.
The two wget lines are the addresses of 2016, kept as they are in the notes. Of the three ASMLib packages only oracleasm, the kernel driver, comes from the SLES repository with zypper.
Checked against Oracle AI Database 26ai on SLES 15
| As built | Today |
|---|---|
| SLES 11 SP3 | General support for SLES 11 SP3 ended on 31 January 2016 and its long-term support on 30 January 2019. Oracle's 26ai guide names one SUSE release, SLES 15 SP5 or later; SLES 16 is not in Oracle's lists |
| The 23 packages of the 11.2 list for SLES 11 | The list was correct for its release. The 26ai list for SLES 15 is a different one: no 32-bit packages, mksh instead of ksh, no libstdc++33; glibc, libaio-devel, libcap1, make and sysstat are still on it |
unixODBC, unixODBC-devel, unixODBC-32bit | An optional feature requirement in 11.2, not a Grid Infrastructure prerequisite |
xorg-x11 | X11 client libraries are enough on the server; the display is a machine that runs an X server |
libcap1 | In the 11.2 Grid Infrastructure list for SLES 11, and still in the 19c and 26ai lists for SLES 15 |
23 separate zypper install commands | One zypper install with all names does the same. SUSE's paper for RAC 19c on SLES 15 SP7 installs the pattern "Oracle Server Base" instead |
cvuqdisk-1.0.9-1.rpm from the database medium | Still required. The package is now in Grid_home/cv/rpm, and the variable CVUQDISK_GRP must point to the owning group, typically oinstall. The notes do not set it |
oracleasm-support 2.1.8, oracleasmlib 2.0.4, driver from SUSE | For SLES 15 Oracle offers oracleasm-support 2.1.12 and oracleasmlib 2.0.17, and SLES 15 SP7 still ships the driver as oracleasm-kmp-default. SLES 16 ships no oracleasm package: ASMLib 3 works there through io_uring without a kernel driver |
| nothing further | On SLES 15 DefaultTasksMax in /etc/systemd/system.conf must be raised to 65535, a step that did not exist in 2016 |
None of these commands can be copied to a current system. The method is unchanged: take the package list of the installation guide for the release and the distribution, install it, and check with rpm -q.
